Is Online Gaming Causing HRIGD in Adolescents?

The world has become a global village and there are many ways to play online games. These include playing with other players from around the world, regardless of geography or technology. Some of the most popular multiplayer games are called “esports” and allow up to 99 players to compete with each other in a series of challenges. Children enjoy playing online games with their friends and random people, and adults enjoy competitive multiplayer games with their colleagues. Here are some of the most popular options:

While the results of the study are encouraging, the lack of independent verification is an issue. The initiation age of exposure to online games was measured using self-report and was not independently verified. However, early exposure to these games did increase the risk of HRIGD later in adolescence. Furthermore, psychosocial variables were assessed at the time of cohort registration in seventh grade. These measures are not as sensitive to differences in scores among individuals.

There is still room for improvement in the definition of “early exposure” to online games. The iCURE study categorized 253 participants as “early” exposures to online games, while 1,507 adolescents were classified as “late” or later. This study was limited to school-based children and the age range for participants was between three and thirteen years. The researchers also noted that the definition of “early exposure” was broad, so the association between early exposure and HRIGD is unclear.

This study is worth conducting further research.

The youngest group was exposed to online games during preschool years, and the most highly-affected individuals were those who were not. The study also showed that exposure to Internet games is associated with a higher risk of developing IGD. The iCURE study did not find any correlation between exposure to these types of game and the risk of developing IGD.
